Overview
Space Mode is an exhibit design case study exploring how the evolution of clothing in science fiction visual media can be translated into a guided narrative. Rather than presenting costume design alone, the project treats it as a reflection of culture that evolves alongside shifts in technology, science, and culture.
The challenge
How might we design an experience that communicates the recursive trendmaking of fashion in science fiction and notice the role of science fiction in modern society?
What I studied
  • Cultural and visual references of iconic costumes of science fiction television and film
  • Analyze its impact on culture and technology in the context of current technology

Key Insights

Go Against the Grain for Impact
Drawing on popular media may be an automatic strategy, especially with the cultural flattening presented by AI tools for research and information gathering. As more organizations incorporate these tools, more work must be done for hands-on research and genuine curiosity to find niche references.
Localization over Homogenization
Paying homage to localized cultures will be the defining differentiator for effective storytelling. To go against the natural flow of homogenization requires going local, in order to adapt a two-pronged approach of cultural relevancy and positioning oneself as a cultural vanguard.

Future Application

The insights gleaned from this project can be useful to clients in creating relevant experiences that align with the current culture while incorporating a unique element for differentiation and memorability.
